Of course, this is exactly where ideologues impose slogans.

The socialists want government to have an outsized role. The libertarians say government should have a minuscule one.

To which I say "a pox on both your houses!" Open your minds and free yourselves from preconceptions. Different problems, different solutions.

In keeping with the ideologues, here's my slogan.

Whatever actually works!

In fact, Adam Smith's argument is that the actions of private individuals engaged in commercial activity not only produces private benefits but also common goods.

The interesting questions for me is which sort of activities are done better by individual action, and which are done better by government. When I reach that point, I am not the least bit interested in political prejudices. Only in what works based on the available evidence.
