This isn't an argument that providing common goods through government is the only thing worth doing.

Of course not.

It's that governments (and the people who elect them) make judgements about the quantity of such goods they wish to purchase.

In a democracy, people may choose to purchase a whole bunch of common goods, or very few, or something in between. There are benefits and costs to any choice.

Come to think of it, providing common goods is the first business of any virtuous government. Trying to think if they do anything that isn't that.

Defence? Common good.

Law? Common good.

Protection of the vulnerable? Common good.

Transportation network? Common good.

Market regulation? Common good.

Raising debt during a catastrophe? Common good.

Taxation? Funding the common good.

Whereas Trump...
