Come to think of it, providing common goods is the first business of any virtuous government. Trying to think if they do anything that isn't that.

Defence? Common good.

Law? Common good.

Protection of the vulnerable? Common good.

Transportation network? Common good.

Market regulation? Common good.

Raising debt during a catastrophe? Common good.

Taxation? Funding the common good.

Whereas Trump...

It seems that some of the smelly-looking, bearded people with weapons who demand the opening of the country think the assertion of personal demands using unmistakeable threats of violence is the same thing as freedom.

Freedom isn't the absence of rules. That's anarchy.

Freedom exists in the presence of rules. Rules made to secure the common good are some of these. Democracy remains the best known method of creating such rules. The testing of them is done through courts.

It just seems that in spite of America claiming to be the home of freedom, a lot of folks have no idea what it is. They presume that nothing but unrestrained personal "rights" are somehow the only means to understand the definition of freedom. As if they don't notice that those rights are revealed/conferred and protected through a constitution and legal system which are common goods. "We the people". First words.
