The good news. The virus is finding it harder work to discover new people to kill in New York state. Well done on the 'uuuugggeeee isolation effort to New Yorkers!
The bad news is that, with a few exceptions, the numbers dying look to be increasing nearly everywhere else. New York's dominance of infections and deaths during the pandemic has concealed the development of the footprint elsewhere, rather like the way Italy worked in Europe. At first, it looked like the severe problems were in the boot. In the end, most countries posted similar figures and Italy looked sorta average.
I don't even begin to understand optimistic assessments of the US at the moment. Just as New York was in a different place to the rest of the US during the first phase of the increase, it is in a different place as New York itself declines. The other states are not declining. They are increasing. Exclude NY and you see the other states breaching the 2,000 deaths per day barrier.
Things will get better in the other states eventually. That's a great thing. But looking at the data for the last few days, I am really scared that excluding NY (and the few states like CA that are doing well), the numbers are getting much worse across the states, not better. Reopening now would be nuts. May looks likely to be horrid to me.
