I think I see what happened. There were an extra 4,591 deaths (probably over a longer period) that were added to the US total. Worldometers has added them to Tuesday. I guess no one wanted to add the spike to the daily total on the same day.

[Update from Worldometers: "New York City today has reported 3,778 additional deaths that have occurred since March 11 and have been classified as "probable," defined as follows: “decedent [...] had no known positive laboratory test for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) but the death certificate lists as a cause of death “COVID-19 or an equivalent" [source]. We will add these to the New York State total as soon as it is determined whether the historical distribution can be obtained." - Not the same figure but hopefully this didn't happen twice.]

"The number of reported deaths in the U.S. from the new coronavirus spiked to nearly double the prior record Thursday, as governors extended their lockdown orders, and the Trump administration released new federal guidelines to reopen the economy.

In the 24 hours ending at 8 p.m. Eastern time Thursday, 4,591 people were reported to have died from Covid-19, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University. The prior record was 2,569 on Wednesday."

The number I see at worldometers is 2,174.
