I am old enough to remember when Trump supporters decided malaria tablets were a magic pill for no reason other than that Trump said so.

I gather that disbelieving the figures to justify restarting the economy is the up-and-coming narrative of Fox News.

So no surprise that you are marching in lockstep, eh, csl!

There's no doubt that there are some people who would have died and not of coronavirus in the same time period. Healthy people also die in car crashes, although not nearly as many as are dying of coronavirus. And some people would have died of heart attacks if they didn't get coronavirus. But as a percentage, the crossover is also likely to be very small.

Just so you know, the powers that be are generally not counting people who are already dead, and whose death was likely the result of coronavirus. This undercounting is probably vast.

How do we know this? Not only because the states are telling us this is what they are doing.

But also because it is possible to compare the normal number of deaths in each week of the year with the data for other years. And it looks like the numbers dying are far greater than those who usually die at this time of year.

Coronavirus is the explanation reasonable people are sticking with.

The federal government is classifying the deaths of patients infected with the coronavirus as COVID-19 deaths, regardless of any underlying health issues that could have contributed to the loss of someone's life.

Dr. Deborah Birx, the response coordinator for the White House coronavirus task force, said the federal government is continuing to count the suspected COVID-19 deaths, despite other nations doing the opposite.

"There are other countries that if you had a pre-existing condition, and let's say the virus caused you to go to the ICU [intensive care unit] and then have a heart or kidney problem," she said during a Tuesday news briefing at the White House. "Some countries are recording that as a heart issue or a kidney issue and not a COVID-19 death.

"The intent is ... if someone dies with COVID-19 we are counting that," she added.
