It is looking like the outcome of the pandemic depends to a huge extent on whether a country flattens the virus' growth curve.

The UK modellers said we would see 250k deaths if the virus overwhelmed the system, but something more like 20k or less if we can hold it within the capacity of the NHS. Multiply everything by 5 to get approximate numbers for the US.

It is great to see that the governors of most of the US states get it, and sad that the US president doesn't.

The way to hold the virus in check is to make as many beds as possible available with accompanying ventilators and trained staff. Then work like crazy for a viable jab and cure.

After this is over, we are going to need to create a much larger population of medical reservists for pandemic purposes, together with stockpiles of supplies and equipment.

Damn. The numbers have shot up at the last minute. Big increases in new cases and deaths in the US again today.

13,347 cases. 247 deaths.

As of tomorrow, it looks like the US will have the most cases of any country with no sign of a slowdown.
