The negotiations between the EU and the UK over the future relationship are going to be quite interesting.

The EU wants the UK to continue to follow EU rules as far as possible and to use market access as leverage.

But that is so 2019. The UK has left the EU and has reestablished its sovereignty. The government isn't going to horsetrade its independence.

So now the question for us is, will our economic relationship be close or distant with our next-door-neighbours? Do we put fish on their dinner tables and give them access to the UK financial markets, or do we sacrifice our access to camembert cheese and Mercedes cars?

If they approach the negotiations in a way that seeks to reduce our independence and so drives the UK away, then we'll align ourselves with our other friends. The risk for the EU is that then the UK, US, Canada, Australia and other English-speaking countries around the world, a far more powerful bloc, gang up on the EU and simply dictate how things are going to be, economically-speaking.

None are in the EU.

UK waters contain approximately six times as much fish as the rest of the EU put together.

This is what Nancy Pelosi calls leverage.

Now we see why they were in a panic about the UK leaving and did everything to stop it. They were looking at our fish and thinking of their empty dining room tables.

They can fill their tables with our fish. It's just they'll have to purchase them rather than taking them for free. The government may sell permits to some vessels on a fixed quota basis. But UK ports are going to be flourishing and our fleets will be gigantic again.
