I am not really sure what they did badly.

They have a strong health service that has just been destroyed by the stupendous infection rate.

But note, the US has moved up into fourth place for number of infections. The US infection rate curve is miles worse than Italy's. I suspect the US administration has found a way to cheat on deaths, because the numbers make no sense. I think the US will have the most cases of any country within a month due to its incompetent response.
