I've visited the Buddy Holly crash site near Clear Lake, IA as well as the Surf Ballroom where Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and J. P. Richardson (AKA The Big Bopper) played their last concert:

The crash site, which is literally in the middle of a farmer's corn field (he allows people to visit the site, which is about a half mile from the road, where there are NO markers or signs, as long as they walk the fence line):
