The good news is that, with a little bit of tweaking, the US can fix its decrepit constitution and recover its democracy.

1. Rethink the Bill of Rights, because rights claims shouldn't ignore the costs all rights impose on other people. Your wish to play your music loudly impinges on my wish for peace and quiet. Call them rights if you wish, but there's another side for all of them.

2. Have your ex-presidents, the Supreme Court and some other folks with non-partisan jobs be the deciders in an impeachment trial. Partisan bodies clearly cannot set aside their political interests when dealing with these sorts of matters.

Lamar Alexander

A name that will live in infamy.

He says he will vote for the corruption of the US political process.

Sad to watch the failure of a constitution and the end of democracy in the US. One side, controlling the process, deemed election cheating okay. And so the result of future US elections will be meaningless. The senate is no trustworthy safeguard. Nice try, framers!

Also a sad, same-day contrast with Brexit. A constitutional monarch makes a presidential claim of absolute power impossible. That's why we keep them. They clarify the difference between the current administration and the nation. Legislators, the military and the courts swear obedience to the crown. The Queen is no Mitch McConnell. Her base is everyone. Her role is non-political. At the end of the day, everyone accepts her judgement because it is non-partisan. This is why it's useful.

Thank god our rickety, old system muddled through. The referendum stands.
