BREAKING: In 5-4 ruling, Supreme Court allows Trump's plan to deny green cards to those who might need gov't aid
The U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, on Monday allowed the Trump administration to deny green cards to legal immigrants who could become "public charges" and overly dependent on government assistance.
The Department of Homeland Security announced in August that it would expand the definition of "public charge," to be applied to people whose immigration to the U.S. could be denied because of a concern that they would primarily depend on the government for their income. The Trump administration is including in that definition noncash benefits, such as Medicaid, supplemental nutrition and federal housing assistance.
