China said it was shutting down transportation from Wuhan, the epicenter of a deadly new virus outbreak.

The announcement, affecting buses, trains, planes and ferries, was a significant escalation from just the day before, when the authorities had declined to impose an official quarantine on the central Chinese city.

The new virus, which first emerged at the end of December, has killed at least 17 people and sickened more than 400.
