U.S. and China sign phase one of trade deal after almost two years of sparring
President Donald Trump and China’s Vice Premier Liu He signed phase one of a hard-fought trade deal on Wednesday, capping a bitter 18-month battle between the world’s two largest economies that has roiled markets and slowed economic growth worldwide.
The trade deal includes a pledge from the Chinese to purchase $200 billion of U.S. goods over the next two years, and an agreement to end the practice of forcing U.S. companies to hand over their proprietary technology in exchange for access to China’s markets.
But many of the thorniest issues were left for later.
