New York paid a whopping $26.6 billion more in taxes to the federal government last fiscal year than it got back in federal spending — the biggest disparity of any state in the nation, a report Tuesday by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found.
“For every dollar New York generates in tax receipts, it receives 90 cents back in federal spending, compared to the national average of $1.21,” DiNapoli said in a statement.
New York was one of just seven states that paid more taxes than it received back from Washington, DiNapoli said.
New Yorkers paid $1,363 more per person to Washington than it got back. Only neighboring states New Jersey (-$2,792) and Massachusetts (-$1,419) fared worse, but they are much smaller states, so their overall gap wasn't as large.
Seven of the 10 states who benefited the most from Washington were in the southern or southwestern parts of the country, DiNapoli said.
New Mexico had a per capita surplus of $10,671, followed by Mississippi ($8,939), Alaska ($8,727), West Virginia ($8,536) and Virginia ($8,189).
The gap between what New York gets and gives to the federal government continues to grow, DiNapoli said.
In the 2018 fiscal year, New Yorkers paid $4 billion more in taxes to Washington, yet only had a $1.5 billion increase in federal spending within the state compared to the prior year.
DiNapoli said the disparity is more reason why the state needs to ensure an accurate census count in the coming years.
