No one died. If he had guns it would have been a different story.

NY gun laws are very strict, and seem to produce results, although someone could buy guns in another state and commit a massacre in NY. In the end, one good way to make headway is for all states to have universal background checks, and red flag laws. We have laws on guns, we need to take out the loopholes, and create a national base for obtaining weapons and owning them. It can be done without limiting the ability of sane, non violent, law abiding citizens to buy what they want.

As horrible as this is, at least he didn't use a gun.
Many more would have been injured/killed.

Five people were stabbed during a Hanukkah party at a rabbi's home in a New York suburb; a suspect has been arrested
Five people were stabbed Saturday night at an event at a rabbi's home in Monsey, New York, about 35 miles from New York City, said Ramapo Police Chief Brad Weidel. A suspect was arrested about two hours later in Manhattan as detectives sought to find a motive for the violence on the seventh night of Hanukkah.

The stabbings come after at least eight anti-Semitic attacks this month in New York City and following a Dec. 10 shooting at a kosher market in Jersey City, New Jersey, that left four dead. There have been a spate of attacks on Jewish people across the nation since late 2018.
