Yes. But Matt Lewis was one of the last to notice. The transition as the scales fall from people's eyes is always exciting to behold. The language of good versus evil is very much the American conservative perspective.

For me, the beginning of the Iraq War when it was evident the Republican government was lying about its motives was the definitive catalyst for my departure. But I suppose it was occasionally listening to Rush Limbaugh that unsettled me in the years leading up to it. I made the classic English mistake of assuming American conservatism and the British Conservative Party believe in the same sorts of things. Listening to American talk radio led to an understanding that that sort of conservatism is an ugly, brutal, puritan ideology, rather than a cautious attitude to progress. And that in the negotiation between ideology and reality, American conservative ideology won every time.

I applied the principle that believing there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq was fine as a hypothesis, but you have to prove the theory for there to be value to it. It became apparent that the US government and many of its people didn't care about the evidence part. And that this is the deep flaw of American conservatism. It cares about ideology and not reality.

This is why Republicans fall into every conspiracy theory hole that their radio and Fox masters put before them. Because they are conditioned to ignore reality and assume the virtue of their ideology. Until they let the air of reality into their bubble, they cannot breathe the truth. And the result of this is that they will respond to reality in a way that is often cruel.

Glad Lewis is sucking on air at last. Our own Lewis is yet to realise his lips are attached to the tailpipe.

In the Age of Trump, the Republicans Are the Evil Party
By Matt Lewis

When I was coming of age, the Democrats were the moral relativists and the victims and the purveyors of sacrilege. Now, it’s the Republicans. It’s sickening to watch.

The impeachment of Donald Trump demonstrated what still feels to me like a weird new development: The Republicans are the evil party, while Democrats (presumably now the “stupid party”?) seemed much more sane, moderate, and honorable.

For most of my life, things appeared the exact opposite. For most of my life, it felt like the Democrats were the ones who were pandering, playing the politics of victimhood, insulting my intelligence, and saying borderline sacrilegious things. Today, the roles are reversed. Just as the parties seem to have switched positions on a myriad of issues like Russia, tariffs, and reverence for the Founding Fathers and American Exceptionalism, it is now the Republicans who are viscerally repellent.

If you watched the debates during impeachment day, you know these are not honest brokers. Their talking points--which I’m assuming are poll-tested--were maudlin, offensive, and manipulative.
