So here's the deal. John Major, more than any other person, got us into this mess. He signed the Maastricht Treaty which massively eroded UK sovereignty, while giving the British people no vote in the matter. Before Maastricht, there was a minority of opponents of Europe. Afterwards, opposition grew, but never had the opportunity of a vote, until Cameron gave us one.

So Major is battling for the wisdom of his own judgement and his responsibility for forcing us into an imperial Europe.

For myself, I think he looks like a plausible man, but he doesn't know much and is the example of much that was wrong with the conservative party post-Thatcher. No one has forgotten he also had an affair with perhaps the least charming MP of his generation, whose name was Edwina Currie.

He and Blair are the two ex-PMs telling people not to vote for their old party. Major was a conservative PM. Blair was a Labour PM. I don't think many people like or follow the advice of either of them.

Cactus Flower,

What's your take with this tactic?

Former Conservative Prime Minister John Major Urges Public to Vote Against Boris Johnson
MAJOR INTERVENTION
Jamie Ross Reporter
Updated Dec. 06, 2019

A former British prime minister from Boris Johnson’s own Conservative party is urging the public to vote against Conservative candidates in the country’s general election next week.

In an unprecedented intervention, Sir John Major is expected join an election rally aimed at preventing Johnson from winning enough seats for a parliamentary majority when voters go to the polls next Thursday. He’s expected to be joined by his successor as prime minister, Tony Blair, at the event in London on Friday.

The pair will urge people to vote tactically for the pro-EU candidates most likely to defeat the Conservatives in their local seats. Both Blair and Major support a second referendum on Brexit. In a pre-recorded speech ahead of the rally, Major will say old “tribal loyalties” of British politics have been loosened by Brexit, and that next week’s vote is the “final chance” to stop it.
