What would they say, that he didn’t do it or that it wasn’t bad enough? They don’t have a single witness to deny the facts established. Like a criminal trial where the defendant doesn’t take the stand because it would be stupid to do so. This way they can keep yapping their BS.

...and might even think that he's cooperating because there might be something to the charges. However, if he refuses to participate, he can continue to condemn the Democrats and attack the process, something that his base WILL understand. This way he can continue to claim that impeaching him is unconstitutional and his base will believe him, which of course is ludicrous because Impeachment is spelled out in black and white in the Constitution.
