Okay. But the US no longer has special standing. There is reputational damage in being a country that consorts with dictators, extorts and abandons allies, tortures its enemies, separates parents from their children on the border and gives a free pass to its murderous soldiers. The US is at best a one candle beacon of human rights, freedom and the rule of law these days.

I imagine Trump did this for leverage. That's to say, in America's interests and not in Hong Kong's. But why would China take America seriously on such matters? It has basically won the trade war already. The nearer the presidential election they get, the more desperate Trump will become to claim a deal and pretend a victory.
