Bush-Cheney embraced the religious right.
A HUGE error for America's reputation for believing in and leading the way in science.

They also helped to create identity politics, condemning gay's, adding that to ballots to incite voters to turn out to vote NO for gay rights.

She's not the first to do so!

The strange thing is the US still thinks of itself as the beacon country. But really, it isn't. Not only because of Trump. The problems became fairly obvious in the 1990s, when the Republicans moved away from science (and fact-based reasoning) - something that hadn't happened under Reagan or Bush Sr. In the 2000s, Bush-Cheney demonstrated that the Rubicon had been well and truly crossed.

Once you lose your moorings in a process for discovering truth, then only partisanship matters. Gradually, the GOP has lost all of its truth tellers. If you look on twitter, the party's most ardent critics are ex-Republicans - the sorts of people who at least still believed in principles. Now it's just a cult of people willing to believe a conman, who promises whatever people hope for, while delivering very little for anyone but himself.
