I can remember when Republicans considered the various May Day parades around the world as a symbol of Socialism and eventually Communism. In fact, the reason our Labor Day is in September was to have it as far from May as possible. Before Labor Day became a holiday, labor unions were fighting to get May Day declared a national holiday celebrating the contribution that labor made to the nation, but Conservatives would only give their support if the holiday was moved to September.
