Mississippi rejected the cost of expanding Medicaid. Its residents are paying the price.
Darlene Velasco went legally blind in May because she couldn't afford to treat her Type 2 diabetes or pay for private health insurance. She didn't qualify for Medicaid coverage because Mississippi lawmakers said expanding the program under the Affordable Care Act would cost too much. Yet a review by NBC News of budgets for all 14 states that refused expansion showed their expenses increased drastically after 2012.
"I’ve gone years without medication, and it’s gotten to a point where you hit rock bottom," she said. "And it’s just like, 'OK, if I go, I go.'"
