"Trump harangued the British leader about her country’s contribution to NATO. He then disputed her intelligence community’s conclusion that Putin’s government had orchestrated the attempted murder and poisoning of a former Russian spy on British soil."

Putin lies as much as Trump. But less implausibly.

I'd like to see the UK spend a bit more on defence, but unlike the vast majority of NATO countries, the UK spends more than the NATO-wide target of 2% of GDP on its defences. The US spends a lot more, but then it gets advantages from doing so. If the UK spent 4% of GDP, like the US, it would still fail to be a superpower. We are apparently strong in cyberspace and intelligence. But I would feel a bit safer if we had a stronger navy and air force, and some sort of national service (although emphasising training for useful wartime services and not entirely a military version of it). So something more like 3% of GDP would make sense to me. Unemployed people could also join if they wanted to retrain.
