As ever, I suspect it is all being misunderstood in the US media. A realignment is underway in preparation for an election.
There will be three main parties:a pro-Brexit party, a Remain party and one seeking to occupy the ground in the middle.
So right now, Boris is making it impossible for the Remainers to undermine Brexit from within the Conservative party. At the next election, they will be replaced by pro-Brexit candidates and they will have to operate from the outside.
That is as it should be as the Remain conservatives all signed up to a manifesto in support of Brexit in the last election in order to retain their constituencies. And then tried to undermine it over and over. This was dishonest, antithetical to the Referendum and conservative members, and they are getting their comeuppance.
Amber Rudd is one of the Remain leaders. Everyone suspected that, in accepting a cabinet post, she hadn't changed her spots. And she hadn't. She is simply trying to use her resignation to damage a pro-Brexit PM. In acting in this way, Brexiters understand that the Remainers are being exposed for what they are. It is a necessary transition.
Boris' lead with the electorate is increasing again today. That is why the opposition refuses to call a General Election. Because Boris will expand his majority and pass the laws required to leave.
So what is happening at this point is the government is trying to get parliament to force an election. And parliament is trying to force Boris not to deliver Brexit.
The good news is that whenever there is a new election, the new parliament can reverse everything this parliament renders into law.
