De Brainless: Mayor Endorses Meritless Helmet and Licensing Requirements for Cyclists

http://nyc.streetsblog.org/2019/09/04/de-brainless-mayor-endorses-meritless-helmet-and-licensing-requirements-for-cyclists/

I hate it when out of shape dickheads try to tell cyclists what to do or to get off the road.

Otoh, there are serious problems in NYC with people on bikes, usually messengers and delivery turkeys riding in between cars out of nowhere, and in the opposite direction on the city’s one way streets. The answer is not helmets, but issuing tickets to the businesses that employ them. I have not seen many individuals riding disobeying traffic rules, it’s the “pros” who need culling. And helmets are not going to change the situation. You don’t put a fence around your house when the problem is a leaky roof.

Helmets are a good idea, in general, no doubt, but not in this case. Licensing for “pros” makes sense, so the businesses that hire them and the idiots themselves pay for how they go about their business.

As for the rest, leave them alone. I believe in survival of the fittest. And institute a three foot law in NY, so assholes in motorized vehicles stay the fk away from me. I don’t ride, of course, in NYC, I ride in the country, and I do 50mph descents, so the 3 ft law should educate assholes with no clue what kind of a wave a car passing by can create when too close, especially trucks. Most people swing far away, needlessly, when passing, to the other lane, but then there is the odd turkey that is oblivious and almost scrapes you, as well as the odd motherfkr with a truck who gasses it with plumes of black smoke as he passes by, and becomes a candidate for tire slashing if I ever find him stopped some place. The only ones who are usually respectful are bike riders who understand the issue of riding on two wheels on public roads, from ...personal experience.
