A Sawyer County man is headed to prison for considerably longer for written threats he made to kill the judge and prosecutor on his prior criminal case, and their families.
Jerry Wayne True, 46, was found guilty at trial in July of four counts of threatening a judge, prosecutor or law enforcement officer.
Bayfield County Circuit Judge John P. Anderson imposed the maximum sentence for each count Tuesday, and made them all consecutive to each other, meaning True will spend 28 years in prison and remain on supervised release for 12 years after his release.
In 2017, while in the Sawyer County Jail for violating conditions of his probation on earlier convictions, True wrote to a friend. In the letter, he detailed his post-release plans — change his name, then kill the district attorney, his assistant, the judge, his probation officer and her supervisor. To top it off, he said, he would blow up the courthouse.
Jail officials intercepted the letter and True was charged.
“Threats like the ones made in this case are an attack on our system of justice,” said Attorney General Josh Kaul. “This case sends a clear message that people who threaten the safety of others face severe consequences.”
