While I don t buy the argument that Americans are generally racist

I do see that Trump encourages the folks who are.

It is certainly possible to draw out nasty behaviour in any country.

But for myself, I think the US has a tremendous majority of people who try very hard to create a relatively unprejudiced environment. That's to say, it isn't and won't ever be without individual instances of behaviour fuelled by racial thoughts. But there are so many people of goodwill, and that will swamp the bad guys over time.
