When people say "the fundamentals of the economy are strong" I wonder if they have any idea what they mean.

What are the fundamentals of the economy?

Is it like when a human being catches a flu that they are really healthy because they have an immune system? Ah yes, I hear them say from their sick bed. I feel fundamentally well. These symptoms mean nothing. One day I expect to recover and that is the only thing that matters. Not that my head hurts and my body aches and my nose is sore and I have a temperature. The fundamentals of my body are robust!

Huh. Last week they claimed to know how to run an economy.

This week, the failure of their only actual economic policy. It involved tax cuts for the rich, a much enlarged deficit and increasing inequality.

So what happened to Obama's steady-but-unexciting economy under Trump?

A short sugar high. And now a recession. As expected from the beginning. It's the Republican way.

Now we get to wonder how deep it will be. Hopefully not as deep as the GOP recession of 2008.
