Wrong again.

Consumer Reports has a category for mid-sized SUVs. The vehicles and their scores, on a scale of 100, are as follows:

1. 2019 Subaru Ascent 96
2. 2020 Kia Telluride 90
3. 2019 Toyota Highlander 85
4. 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL 81
5. 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe 80
6. 2019 Ford Edge 78
7. 2019 Kia Sorrento 78
8. 2019 Mazda CX-9 78
9. 2019 Nissan Murano 77
10. 2019 Honda Pilot 74
11. 2019 Honda Passport 73
12. 2019 Ford Flex 69
13. 2019 Chevrolet Blazer 67
14. 2019 Dodge Durango 67

So there you have it. The highest ranked European mid-sized SUV is the Volkswagen Atlas, 18th on the list and - thanks to some ties - in 14th place. That's rather bad. Its chief failing is RELIABILITY. In other words, the best European model is a piece of crap that breaks down.

Note that the vehicle you drove, the 4Runner, is ranked even lower. No wonder you think Toyotas suck. The 4Runner does. But so do the European SUVs. Do your homework before you rent next time.
