There was a program the other night covering the annual Tarantula festival held in Northern California and they stated that there is no recorded cases of a person dying as the result of a Tarantula bite. Granted, a bite can be painful and there's always a chance of an infection, but the venom itself is not fatal to humans. And they will only bite a human if you corner them or don't let them move around on their own.
