Now I think about it, and not wanting to whitewash the issue, I did meet one truly dreadful Republican. But he was hateful in every way. Not just about race. I received the xenophobic angle, and decided not to wait for the second amendment conversation!

Whaddayou know? I am the one saying the nice things about y'all and you are writing many of your people off!

I have met Americans who appear to have these issues, but mostly in a minor way. The vast majority did not. A huge number are concerned to be egalitarian, just like you.

Lived in the US for a quarter of a century, so I am not entirely naive. The vast majority of folks I met seemed fine. Overly concerned, if anything. Maybe I had a poor sample. I did know a few Republicans. Was married to one of them! Had July 4th with another of them every year and enjoyed their company too. They explained their issues to me, about liking what they had and worrying about losing it. I understand that feeling.

What I did notice from the moment I arrived in the US was that there was a constant drumbeat about racism and it seemed counterproductive. As if it encourages the people inclined to think racially, to do so. That relentlessly saying people are racist, and reacting to any mistake on a hair-trigger, actually makes them feel like the victim.

So in a way, I see the supposed solution, berating people for malicious purposes, as contributing to the problem.

But I haven't lived in the deep south!
