Oh, I agree that Trump is a racist! And he encourages a loathesome minority.
But I also think they are a product of the self-centred me-victim model of identity politics and not leading it.
So since our analyses aren't quite the same, our solutions likely wouldn't be either. I don't think you fix America by getting rid of Trump, although he needs to be gone. He is a symptom of the disease, not the disease itself. The disease is that Americans have learnt that the squeaky wheel gets the oil. Being a victim works for people - as I have pointed out extensively with the Me-Too movement. Attorneys and their clients often extort payouts from innocent people who have made the mistake of starting a business or becoming a celebrity. Trump tells people they should feel sorry for themselves and they eat it up.
The USA isn't the land of the free and the home of the brave. It's the land of the whiny and the home of the victim. The cultural timber is rotten. The exceptionalism mythology has led to national conceit rather than muscular individuallism. Ease of access to law has led to a law that favours lawyers and liars. I wish it weren't so.
My interest is in defining the problem in all its ugliness so that I can try to figure what the solution might be. Fundamentally, I want the US to work. It's miserable to watch the descent of a nation which might be far better than it is right now.
