Laid back, extremely friendly and polite people, no cops in sight, no crime, just people living their lives in a nice peaceful way.
Amazing produce as this valley feeds Colorado. The junction of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers provides plenty of water, the liquid gold as it’s called here, to feed a super fertile valley between dry rocks, mesas, and beautiful deep thick spruce and aspen forests, all within an hour drive or less from downtown. Aspen is a couple of hours away, and Ouray less than that.
The lack of crime and not having seen a single police car in a week is amazing. No enforcement of speed limits, either. But, I did not see any speeding either. People have decided reason is a thing to have here. Had the best peaches and plums since I left Athens, the real thing, many wineries and making really high end bourbon and gin.
Open lands, 75% here are public lands, park your car and disappear into the landscape, no trespassing signs shit, America as it was created.
Housing is affordable.
Colorado is a super state. Only problem is Denver airport is over 3 hours away.
Finally, the area is stunning. Moab UT is only 1:45 away, a huge national parks destination of incomparable beauty and outdoorsiness. I went horse back riding in the canyons at sunset and it was surreal, the views, the smells, the air, the colors, it all makes the east so mundane, although NY has some stunning areas, mountains or sea, Hamptons and Montauk among the best sea shores and beaches in the US, and my Hudson valley, a most beautiful area, BUT, weather from Nov to even May is AN ISSUE! And it still can’t match this by a mile.
Plus, NY has more cops than ants, lurking around to give you a speeding ticket at every fkng hide out. F Y’ALL 🤪
Don’t need that shit. I need FREEDOM. Colorado is FREEDOM.
