Alaska defunds scholarships for thousands of university students ahead of fall semester
After the University of Alaska lost 41 percent of its state funding, thousands of students were told Alaska would no longer be providing promised state scholarships.
A state scholarship in Alaska that awarded nearly $5,000 annually to some students has been defunded, leaving students unsure of whether they can afford to start classes this fall. "I'm scared," one student told NBC News. "I held up my end of the bargain ... We earned that money."
The Alaska Performance Scholarship was caught up in what is known in the state as "the sweep" — a budgetary process that, although convoluted, usually sees funding returned to programs affected by it. But a few Republican legislators this year blocked the reversal, creating what one critic described as a "perfect storm of bad politics and policy."
