Scorched earth: As the world grows hotter, the military grapples with a deadly enemy it can't kill
The U.S. military is facing a deadly threat driven by climate change: More troops are falling to heatstroke during training exercises, NBC News found in an investigation with InsideClimate News, a nonprofit news organization. Since 2008, as temperatures have risen, at least 17 service members have died and thousands more have gotten sick.
In 2016, Sgt. Sylvester Cline, 32, an Iraq combat veteran and father of five, collapsed during a training session on a sweltering Arkansas day. An Army investigation into his death found that commanders had disregarded heat safety rules. "Things will have to change so other boys don’t die," Cline’s mother said.
