76 billion opioid pills: Newly released federal data unmasks the epidemic

In this item there's a link (see below) to a site where you can select a state and then a county, and you'll get a report as to the number of prescription opioid drugs that have been filled in that county. It will also indicate the average number of opioid pills that have been prescribed per person, per year in that county. It will also disclose how many pills were prescribed by the pharmacies in the selected county.
Note that the data covers a six year period from 2006 thru 2012.
Here in Orange Co (CA), it worked out to 24.5 pills per person, per year. Back in my home town in Northern Michigan, in that county it was 61.5 pills. What was a real shocker was that the only pharmacy in my home town of Lewiston, population 1392 in the 2010 census, sold more than 1,700,000 opioid pills over the six year period covered by the data.
