Iran seized foreign tanker and crew for smuggling oil in Gulf, state TV says
Iran's Revolutionary Guard has seized a foreign oil tanker and accused its 12 crew members of smuggling oil, state TV reported Thursday. The ship was seized in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway off Iran's coast which separates the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, according to IRIB. The report added that the vessel was towed on Sunday after a distress call and later seized for fuel smuggling.
The seizure comes as tensions mount between the United States and Iran over the unraveling nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers. The U.S. Fifth Fleet said it was aware of the reports but did not comment further.
