From a US perspective, maybe they might be paid more. Sounds like they are a bigger draw.
On the other hand, the wages of male footballers are defined by the international market, and the best players play in the European leagues, with huge global audiences. Like baseball players and basketball players, they are paid ludicrous amounts. But this is because men's football is immensely popular. Women's soccer is growing, but is not on the same plane.
I know Senator Warren implies the US government should impose equal wages for women soccer players. But for me, this would be better done as a market-based opportunity, in which women drive up the price of their pay by being very good at what they do, taking the reins of their game and building their audience, rather than by government intervention.
Once again, I find Warren's economic instincts are awry. Too much of an academic, as if money grows on money trees and it is the government's job to interfere in business on behalf of some ivory tower idea of equality. If wealthy athletes are taxed on their earnings at the rate they ought to be, that's enough.
Like her otherwise. But this is why I am not enthusiastic.
