But I wonder if sticking with the Unity part of the USA is more about addiction to power than it is to virtue. Is being the most powerful country what really matters? Because surely the sense of American exceptionalism is now in the dumpster.

There are American Dreams that don't actually encourage the less fortunate to carve out extra special advantages for the extremely wealthy.

There are American Dreams that continue to imagine a responsive, evolving liberal democracy but have less interest in the size of a country's influence throughout the globe.

There are American Dreams that are concerned more by decency than dollars.

I am afraid the USA isn't capable of pursuing any of these American Dreams any more. Wish it were otherwise.

One of these years, Americans will see that they are better off not being part of a country run by a man like Trump. And that seceding from the American union is one path out of there.

I know folks are taught from the cradle to the grave that the US is indivisible. But the nation that wanted to represent an idea of a benign liberal democracy isn't that any more. One party believes in democracy so little that they are willing relentlessly to cheat at the ballot box, to accept the disruption of a hostile power, to undermine the rule of law, and so on.

It's become my country, right or wrong. Or actually, my country, corrupt and wrong, most of the time.

What is America now? To what do Americans pledge allegiance?

I can't say I know any more. It's sad to watch.
