Re: 'And here are YOUR words you put in my mouth: “What country do you think has a better Constitution?”'
- zzfart #msg-1091125

It's good that we're having this discussion because it's clear that we both have a lot to learn. I've learned that you don't understand what the phrase "put words in my mouth" means and that you don't know how to use quotation marks. YOU get to learn those two things -- right now! I'm going to teach you because, like most conservatives, I try to help.

Quotation marks encapsulate words taken from somewhere else. "Encapsulate" is a big word and I don't expect you to understand it, so here you go:

That is a mouthful, isn't it? Can you say it? Yes! I knew you could! Good boy. When this lesson is over, go get yourself a treat.

So, quotation marks ENCAPSULATE other words, and that means that they need to be on both sides of the borrowed text. You'll notice that up above, in this very message, I have actually quoted you quoting me. Because a quote within a quote is more complicated, I've used SINGLE quotation marks to encapsulate what you wrote and double quotation marks to encapsulate my words.

An extremely important part of quoting other people is to include the closing quotation marks. If you omit them, the reader will rightfully think that the text following the quote continues to be what someone else said or wrote and can then accuse the other party of "putting words in his mouth." The reader can also do this if the other party doesn't quote at all and simply "paraphrases" - which means to make up what another person supposedly said, sometimes getting it close to right and sometimes not. Paraphrasing is usually done out of laziness and is nearly always a bad idea unless you state up front that you are paraphrasing.

Your mistake was the first one. You either didn't notice the closing quotation mark in my post or did not understand what it meant. You made the mistake of thinking that the part that followed the quotation was also being attributed to you, although it clearly wasn't to people who know how to read English.

Now, about that phrase "putting words in your mouth": What it means is that someone is saying you said something that you did not say. If you go take a close look at my initial post, you will see that I did not either imply or state that you had said “What country do you think has a better Constitution?” Therefore I did not put any words in your mouth. I merely quoted you and responded to your words with a question of my own.

It was a simple misunderstanding on your part - and an easy one for someone with your language skills to make! Hopefully you've now learned something and will not make those mistakes again.
