California is bringing law and order to big data. It could change the internet.
The rest of the country is watching closely as California works to finalize its wide-ranging Consumer Privacy Act, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2020, and forces companies to divulge what data they collect and how it can be used for online ads.
Xavier Becerra, California’s attorney general, equated its rollout to Obamacare, noting that mistakes could end up sinking consumer confidence in the law.
"I don’t think you ever want to give people a reason to believe that you hoodwinked them," Becerra said in an interview. "Think back to the launch of the Affordable Care Act’s website. That really depressed people’s belief that this was going to work."
