In the end, tariffs are an onerous burden on everyone. Free trade is much preferable to protectionism ... and free trade is what President Trump wants. However, when you are trading with a party who is as patently disreputable and thieving as China, then tariffs are the only answer. It is the only way to get the other party's attention and possibly convince them to change their fraudulent ways.
The benefit of President Trump's tariffs against China?
I do not believe Communist China will EVER commit to and follow through on free trade with anyone, so I do not believe these tariffs will possibly accomplish a change of heart in how the Communist Chinese deal deceitfully with everyone else. The definite benefit, though ... if the tariffs are imposed long enough ... is to ultimately push American companies towards other markets than China. The United States is FAR better off to not trade with China AT ALL. There is no benefit to trading with cheats, thieves, and liars like the Communist Chinese.
