No party that cares about reason and integrity would have made Trump its candidate.

But the GOP abandoned reason and integrity as core to its ideas long ago: it did so when it argued over evolution and climate science without sticking to the evidence; it did so when it continued to promote supply side economics when it was clear it had failed as a hypothesis; it did so when it argued for originallism when it suited current Republican positions, but tortured plain language when it did not.

And so they ended up with a candidate in their own image. Only with different ideas about which to be unreasonable and dishonest. Ones that are even more self-absorbed and brutal than their own previous ones.

The Republicans sewed the soil from which Trump sprung. Now they, and America, are stuck with him.

Many Americans will have newfound sympathy for the German predicament in the 1930s.

He's not a traitor. He is extremely loyal to Putin.

The problem is at the US end, in which the GOP has lost faith in multi-race democracy and decided it is willing to cheat to win elections.

The tea leaves are there for the reading. They are promoting their aims: through gerrymandering; through Supreme Court seat-stealing; through census question changing; through the avoidance of oversight. Basically, they are willing to cheat to stop America from being taken over by brown and black people.

Trump is a symptom of what you get when you abandon the idea that this is a country of laws. A country of men soon becomes the country of one man.

I doubt the US will have a fair election in 2020.
