War ain't pretty. The tactic demoralized the South and greatly impacted its ability to wage war. Ethically, it was comparable to the bombing of Hiroshima. Moral and effective, imo, though we both know that some of the soldiers took it too far.

'Stonewall Jackson' - Now there was a brilliant tactician. If
memory serves me correctly, he moved his infantry around much
faster than most would have thought possible. His loss was not
good for the Confederacy.
