It was the stone vault that really saved the cathedral below. Is that what the firefighters were focussed on? Cooling the stone of the vault as best as possible while letting the roof burn as fast as possible above it?

If so, danged smart. Remove the fuel and the fire goes out quickly.

The breach in the vault was mainly north-south across the building, including the crossing under the spire, rather than east-west along the spine from the west entrance to the altar.

I think the organ is probably okay as it is at the west end under part of the vault which is still standing. Only major risk is water damage.

I suspect they may get the cathedral back faster than people currently imagine.

and some of the medieval relics like the crown of thorns.

Particularly pleased and surprised about the organ.

Some of the stone vault/ ceiling survived, which is astonishing. But surely it will need to be replaced.

Statues around the altar look like they survived, along with a cross over the altar.

Perhaps two of the big rose windows also survived.

Bad as it looks today ...

Sounds like they'll be able to make it as good as new over several years.
