Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg oversaw plans to consolidate the social network’s power and control competitors by treating its users’ data as a bargaining chip, according to 4,000 pages of leaked company documents from 2011 to 2015 obtained by NBC News. At the same time as senior Facebook leaders were exploring ways to profit from user data, Facebook publicly claimed to be protecting that data.
The strategy orchestrated by Zuckerberg had some of his employees comparing the company to villains from Game of Thrones, while a senior engineer called Facebook’s plans “sort of unethical.”
