Ex-NYPD Sgt. Indicted for Alleged Shooting Cover-Up Attempt
Former NYPD Sgt. Ritchard Blake has been indicted by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office for allegedly attempting to cover up a crime scene after shooting Thavone Santana during an altercation on Aug. 2, 2018, prosecutors said.
Blake turned himself in on Friday and is expected to be arraigned on two counts of tampering with physical evidence charges. Blake told officers he fired in self defense, but an internal investigation was opened after a surveillance video revealed Blake allegedly planted a knife on Santana after the shooting. Blake has since been removed from the NYPD and Santana, whose jaw was wired shut following the shooting, has filed a civil lawsuit against Blake.
According to the lawsuit, the NYPD was aware of Blake’s violent predisposition. “Sgt. Blake has a prominent and long history of violence, assaults and was the subject of Internal Affairs investigations of his actions in 2010, 2011 and 2016 and was disciplined for his violations of NYPD Policies,” the lawsuit said.
