Northern Ireland is independent of Eire/ Ireland to the south. The North is majority protestant and is part of the United Kingdom. The south is majority catholic and is a sovereign nation.

They are different things. The EU wants to protect the south as part of its domain. The UK wants to defend the north as part of its territory. The south depends on Britain for its access to Europe. So the difficulty is to find a way to allow Irish goods to reach the EU through the UK without creating a hard border and without compromising the UK's sovereignty.

From what I've heard, seems like a part of Ireland is a sticking point?
