The other thing about claiming victim status is that there's usually an implied or explicit claim that someone has made you a victim. It's a two-sided equation.

It's a good idea to be precise about who the oppressor is and whether there's an explanation for it. If it's a large class, then there's a huge burden on the claimant to show that everyone in that class is malign.

Many folks have problems in life but this doesn't mean a vast category of people are prejudiced against them. Some things are bad luck. Some things are due to the victim's failings. Some people are arseholes to everyone, not just one type of person.

I guess I bridle against people making over broad claims and situations in which people's motives may be impure.
